EURIE Team’s contacts at the NAFSA Conference
EURIE team met with the representatives of KAFSA (Korean Association of Foreign Student Administrators), Association of Arab Universities and the Qatar Foundation to give information about the EURIE 2017 at the NAFSA Conference held in Denver, CO, USA recently. These associations pledged their support and participation to EURIE 2017.

Advocacy for Access to Higher Education Day
There are efforts by various NGOs to launch a World Access to Higher Education Day in 2017 to bring attention to issues of equity and diversity in higher education. A new consortium is also underway with the participation of universities and NGOs from around the world for the study of this issue, advocacy and sharing of best practices. University of Edinburgh and NEON National Education Opportunities Network, UK are leading the consortium-building efforts.
Universitas 21 (U 21) ranking of national higher education systems  
U 21 offers a ranking which shifts the quality discussion away from individual institutions to national systems’ overall performance. It functions as a benchmark for governments and policy-making. U 21 2016 rankings for national higher education systems revealed that while the top 5 are the United States, Switzerland, Denmark, the United Kingdom and Sweden, China is the country to watch with the most improved performance from 2015.


Nobel Laureate Prof. Sancar Visited Turkish Universities
Prof. Aziz Sancar was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2015 for his research on how cells repair DNA damage, which can be used to develop new cancer treatments. Prof. Sancar, born in Turkey in 1946, has received his medical degree from Istanbul University. He is currently, a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. In May, Prof Sancar visited various Turkish universities in Izmir, Ankara and Istanbul and met with academics and students.
Early Zika Virus Research in the University of Glasgow Archive  
Handwritten original research documents relating to the first known identification of the Zika virus have been uncovered at the University of Glasgow’s Archive. The papers, belonged to Professor Alexander Haddow, a University of Glasgow gradute, later a dean, and a key member of the investigative team who originally discovered the Zika virus in Uganda in the mid-20th century.
